Given the inherent problems with reporting in epidemiological studies (questionnaires and such), i think it would be interesting if we only had a thread that contains nutrition clinical trials on end points such as heart disease mortality, total mortality and quality of life. With perhaps exception to epidemiology that measures biomarkers that can be used to validate intake, such as measuring CLA in people who drink pastured dairy.

It certainly helps to have a control group.

The effect of replacing saturated fat with mostly n-6 polyunsaturated fat on coronary heart disease: a meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials

"When pooling results from only the adequately controlled trials there was no effect for major CHD events (RR = 1.06, CI = 0.86–1.31), total CHD events (RR = 1.02, CI = 0.84–1.23), CHD mortality (RR = 1.13, CI = 0.91–1.40) and total mortality (RR = 1.07, CI = 0.90–1.26)." "Available evidence from adequately controlled randomised controlled trials suggest replacing SFA with mostly n-6 PUFA is unlikely to reduce CHD events, CHD mortality or total mortality. The suggestion of benefits reported in earlier meta-analyses is due to the inclusion of inadequately controlled trials. These findings have implications for current dietary recommendations."

Negative effect of vegetable oil probably underestimated because saturated fat groups tended to have less health advice, higher transfat intakes and quality of the fat was not taken into account. It may also take longer for omega 6 to compound before the negative effects start to increase.

That said, nuts probably have a  positive effect compared to vegetable oils.

It could very well be that a handful of nuts could outperform higher quality saturated fat sources (pastured animal products, dark chocolate, coconut), but as far as i know there are no clinical trials investigating this.

Also, that header is full of errors. My bad, if its possible for a mod to fix i would very much appreciate it. "Nutrition clinical trials effect on mortality, disease and quality of life".
