Interesting, but if you draw a line between the total genome of mammals and fish (or even worms) the problem disappears. Thus he had to resort to using "functional non-redundant genomes" to make the straight line work. And you'd expect that the first evolutionary pressure would have been toward larger genomes. This could be achieved by duplication or combination, but either way, there would have been an explosion of base pairs in the earliest days.
