I know this has been an ongoing issue for a generation but it looks like these disgusting corporations are really making a move toward ending net neutrality.

Have we considered this and its effect on immortality, science and the free circulation of information on what, till now, has been a free internet?

This proposal would turn the internet into cable television, with tiered services and disgusting limits on information exchange, basically putting the top payers on the "fast lane".

Please tell me my fellow longecity members give a serious FUCK about this!

I haven't really seen this topic discussed much here so I wonder!

Amongst all of the other bullshit that goes on in this forum, yes we do care. at least I care.

There is however nothing we can do individually which will prevent it, each effort to keep the internet free needs to be a group effort.

And if all else fails we will need to create a second internet, one which utilizes home made internet backbone infrastructure, with the consistent effort of every single user out there to maintain it. Ie. Impossible.

And it should be noted that there is already a form of this going on in the form of Google and their censorship of the internet by basically making a website disappear from their search rankings they can effectivley kill an entire website, ensuring that it never exists anymore at all.

There is an alternative however. A peer to peer search engine system. http://yacy.net/  but as I'm sure you are aware of this only prevents google from censoring the internet.

There is also: http://search.yacy.net/

Basically.

God help us.

"There is however nothing we can do individually which will prevent it, each effort to keep the internet free needs to be a group effort."

^^^ This is a totally useless attitude in my opinion.

I mean, there is always millions of people marching on washington and saying "we aren't going to pay for this shit if you tier it, or take certain paid privileges away".

You really think the corporate assholes will not cave in to something so broad?

I was talking in terms of an individual not even blipping on their radar and that we would need to join forces for them to even recognize our existence.

I think that the individual's power is something of a pipe dream, something which we are told inorder to give us something to hold onto when we feel powerless against a corporation.

I once rung up a major restaraunt chain and told them that there is one of their restaraunts which is putting out food that is making people sick. The response I got back was "You know you can't prove any of this. Just give up now and forget about it happening."

I wanted to go fucking thermonuclear on the place. But then I realized I would be arrested or shot.

I think the corporate assholes have no soul and as a result do not actually care wether or not the earth dies or that we all walk around bearing the mark of the beast.

The whole idea behind being a corporation is to make profit. If they cannot profit off of something then that hurts their brains.

In Australia companies are mostly vile soulless criminals capable of doing anything to turn another dollar over on their stock prices.

So yes, I don't believe that this war will be fought with boxes of tissues and hand holding. I'm not good with fighting against a corporation, that is more somebody elses job. Hence the need for power in numbers before anything substantial happens.

That's the way things are built now I think anyway.

Check THIS OUT!

http://www.theverge....-challenges-fcc

The full text of the letter can be read below, and a full list of signatories can be seen here.

Dear Chairman Wheeler and Commissioners Clyburn, Rosenworcel, Pai, and O’Reilly: We write to express our support for a free and open internet. Over the past twenty years, American innovators have created countless Internet-based applications, content offerings, and services that are used around the world. These innovations have created enormous value for Internet users, fueled economic growth, and made our Internet companies global leaders. The innovation we have seen to date happened in a world without discrimination. An open Internet has also been a platform for free speech and opportunity for billions of users.

The Commission’s long-standing commitment and actions undertaken to protect the open Internet are a central reason why the Internet remains an engine of entrepreneurship and economic growth.

According to recent news reports, the Commission intends to propose rules that would enable phone and cable Internet service providers to discriminate both technically and financially against Internet companies and to impose new tolls on them. If these reports are correct, this represents a grave threat to the Internet.

Instead of permitting individualized bargaining and discrimination, the Commission’s rules should protect users and Internet companies on both fixed and mobile platforms against blocking, discrim- ination, and paid prioritization, and should make the market for Internet services more transparent. The rules should provide certainty to all market participants and keep the costs of regulation low.

Such rules are essential for the future of the Internet. This Commission should take the necessary steps to ensure that the Internet remains an open platform for speech and commerce so that America continues to lead the world in technology markets.

FOR ANYBODY WHO GIVES A FUCK ABOUT FREE AND OPEN INTERNET AND WHO DOES NOT WANT A GOVERNING BODY TO DICTATE WHAT WE CAN DO WITH IT OR WHAT INTERNET PROVIDERS CAN PROVIDE BASED ON A AWFUL TIERED MODEL OF OUR FREE INTERNET.
Here's what YOU can do. Calling the FCC or your representatives only takes a couple of minutes:
- Courteously call the FCC.
1. Dial 888-225-5322
2. push 1, 4, 0
3. a person will answer.
4. they will ask for your name and address. you can just give them a zip code if you want.
5. "I'm calling to ask the FCC to reclassify Internet Service Providers as Title Two Common Carriers."
6. They'll ask if there is anything else you would like to add.
7. "No, Thank you for your time."
8. hang up.
- Courteously call your representatives and Senators.
1. Go to http://www.contactingthecongress.org/
2. type in your zip code
3. Call the listed DC phone number.
4. Follow the instructions to reach a person.
5. Mention you are a constituent, give some details showing constituency, like an address, school district or zip code.
6. "I'm calling to ensure that my representatives and senators demand the FCC reclassify Internet Service Providers as Title Two Common Carriers. Net Neutrality is essential to me, my family and our community. "
7. Thank the person talking to you for their time.
- Tell the FCC chairman to stop the Internet Slow Lane Plan (Citizens of any country)
1. Go to https://openmedia.org/SlowLane
2. Fill in the form to the right
3. Hit send.

And a bunch of other's signed on various government websites.

What the fuck is going on in the longevity community being so apathetic about this though?

I see virtually zero conversation about it. WTF are we pro totalitarian?

Hahahahaha, you seriously fucking think petitions work? Oh, that's rich.

The Internet is dead until someone snaps and actually cooks a few CEOs/FCC heads. Until then, long live Hyperboria.

If you want to act, try actually doing something. Don't waste your time collecting a list of names that nobody in a position of power gives a FUCK about.

Hey man if you want to waste your time with your ass in a desk chair fingering your belly button while complaining why shit sucks so bad, then you should probably get up out of the chair and do something, yeah? Stands to reason anyway.
