How long do common antioxidants (such as those in grape, blueberries, or powders made from similar things)   stay in the system?(halflife if you want to be more clear) Do they get used up daily/hourly/etc ?

I assume also that certain types of antioxidants stay in the system for longer than others. The type I mentioned are probably among those that get used up faster.

Quercetin looks like it has a relatively short half life of 90 minutes ("1–2 hours after IV injection").

https://en.wikipedia.../wiki/Quercetin

The burn rate of other antioxidants like Vitamin-E are determined by levels of pro-oxidants, chiefly iron, the ultimate "anti-antioxidant".

https://www.ncbi.nlm.../pubmed/8410355

Vitamin E is protective against iron toxicity and iron-induced hepatic vitamin E depletion in mice

"iron-induced depletion of vitamin E may play a role in the pathogenesis of iron toxicity"

Keeping pro-oxidant iron low reduces the need for dietary antioxidants and/or high dose supplementation.

Here is some info on the half lives of various antioxidants:

Vitamin C 1000 mg · · · · · Half life: 30 mins· · Crosses BBB: Oxidized form does

Vitamin E 400 mg· · · · · · Half life: 2 days · · Crosses BBB: Yes, to a degree

Grape seed extract 500 mg · Half life: 3 days · · Crosses BBB: Yes

Note: I gathered the above half-life data some time ago, and I am not sure now whether it is the elimination half-life or the terminal half-life of the antioxidant, or a mixture of the two that is given.

I am pretty sure most things build up in your blood after a while so you only need to take them once a day does not matter. the reason for time release drugs are because too much is being released at once not to increase the duration of the drug so it lasts all day.

NAC supplement has like 6 hour half life but I can feel it all day. So if you take it everyday you should be aight. Food takes 24-72 hours to digest so that its about how long a drug should be active in you from the last dosage regardless of the half life. But their effect can last longer like in the case with MAO inhibitors which your body takes weeks to rebuild all the MAO. just depends how long you've been taking it and other factors etc.

can a drug be used up before its half life runs out?Say for example a vitamin like b12 with its 6 day half life, if you are deficient in b12 will the effects of b12 run out sooner? Or are vitamins not used up but are just there in the body to activate its pathways until it has cleared 100%?
