I am forced to open this topic, because some participants tend to discuss the eternal philosophical question:

If the half-eaten cake is the same as it was or not?

Or,

A person in his/her eighties is the same as 40 years (70 years) ago? Some said yes, the same, which is ridiculous. Not a single cell is the same neither memories or skills, how can this be the same?

Ahoy! A new friend stands on the beach and waves a hand determinedly at The Ship of Theseus. We see you, brother!

Listen, when we dock, permission to board ship may be granted if you'll first kindly say a little about 神宮.

Not a single cell is the same neither memories or skills, how can this be the same?

So, you are no more than your parts? Science reduces everything to bits and pieces. This describes a large class of phenomena. That this class includes all phenomena is just an assumed postulate.

See Josh Mitteldorf  The Other Half of Science. (Dr. Mitteldorf has a PhD in physics) "A reductionist approach to science has become so ubiquitous that many scientists find it difficult to imagine that science can be done in any other way."

It depends on what you define as parts. First, we are the sum of our cells. Then there is consciousness. The third part is our memories. And last but not least - our social enviroment.

The sum of these parts makes us who we are. Do you agree with this approach?
