29, male, physically healthy...mentally not so much. Battled severe anxiety and OCD for years during college and shortly after, coupled with brain fog, poor memory, inability to learn.
What’s interesting is that before school, I wasn’t this way at all. Focused, full of life, and most important, no depression or fog at all.
Nowadays I’m largely doing well-thanks to megadoses of vitamin D. As other posts will show I’m having issues with hypercalcemia due to D/K ratios I’m still working on, but mentally this is the best I’ve been in years.
Importantly, my D levels are way above therapeutic (>100ng/ml). If I stop, after a few days the depression, fog, back pain etc comes right back. What’s interesting is how quickly my pain threshold and flexibility worsens as I stop taking D. Socially, I’m outwardly jolly-but in my head there’s a brutal turmoil.
I’ve not experienced major physical changes in the interval between feeing well and just falling off the edge. The one clue I can think of is that as a child, I always used to take a multi, which stopped in Uni.
So...what’s wrong with me? I’m wondering if there’s a major nutrient missing? The Vit D megadose could be covering up something else? The status quo with Vit D is OK but I note that my levels are far beyond what I’d ever get “naturally” so I’m wondering if something else is the root cause (or would I be this badly off “in the wild”?).

Who knows? But Vitamin D suppresses autoimmunity.
I would look at Mikhaila Peterson story, a bit of overlapping symptoms with you and it's not that hard to test treat yourself with diet for a month.

I think you're probably APOE4. Have you had a gene test? If you can't get one take precautions before it's too late

Suffering so need some help with this. Perhaps I have a calcium issue? Maybe the key is to take a calcium supp alongside less vitamin D (which makes me itchy and insomniac)?
I would note that Vit K quickly diminishes my cognition...perhaps through too much calcium inhibition?

Have you seen a doctor and had a comprehensive blood panel? I'd start there.

Not since I last went, at which time I had very low D levels (21). Doesn’t help that for some reason I can’t access my patient portal...any speculation would help in the interim.

Calcium on its own is a cellular toxin. Taking Vit K2 with D3 helps improve calcium utilization, and should prevent arterial calcification and the like.
Vit D interacts with a surprising number of biochemical pathways. That supplementing it helps unfortunately doesn't say much about a potential diagnosis. Magnesium strongly interacts with calcium, which makes it a candidate. Do you have muscle cramps, tension headaches, or anything like that?
Could also be related to MTHFR, other mineral deficiencies (magnesium and zinc tend to be most common, but others are possible), toxic overload, or autoimmunity -- among others things.

Yeah vit D is so nonspecific it doesn’t help.
Tried methyl vitamins and felt horrible even though I went through the entire genetic genie process and am bad for A1298C. Also bad for the D receptors so I guess I do need more than normal. But the doses that make me feel good are so far beyond normal that I think there’s something else at play.
Thanks so much again. Any other speculation would really help.

I heard of someone who had something similar. He was getting mercury poisoning from eating tuna fish every day. When he stopped eating tuna the symptoms went away.

For what it's worth....going to throw this in because my maternal side of the family all suffer with ocd. Paternal do not. I'm split down the middle. Most of the time I don't have it, but I have the odd 'flare,' - rare enough not to be a problem, but pretty intense when it's 'active.'
Anyway, I am taking inositol because some ocd doctors on the net recommended it. And I believe it works. I think it's actually made those flares less likely. On the odd occasion where I might run out, I notice mild but significant symptoms.
The only thing is I'm now having to do a little more research because I think there is some evidence that inositol can lower testosterone. I don't think it's straightforward (and I see there's another thread on this subject), but I need to think it through because, even though I'm female, there are problems associated with low testosterone in women, as well as men.
The only other thing I'd ask is do you remember having a bad throat infection at any point when all this seemed to start? There is a condition known as PANDAS, I'm not sure what it stands for but its related to strep throat and onset of ocd.
Don't give up, cognitive behavioural therapy is really helpful, but I think you're right to look for a biochemical / physiological explanation if possible because it's not a psychological illness. CBT certainly helps nip it in the bud at times though and Dr Jonathan Grayson is one to consider in this regard, he's brilliant re ocd.
